We will be 'self sufficient' but need to get on air first to become so.

Try working with a mobile phone company - they may need a mast in your area

No idea I'm afraid, but phoning round companies in your area does sound like a good idea - some of them might agree to donate some money in return for giving them some coverage when you go live.

Ask everyone and anyone and then those who you think would not be interested as well

Get in with the local papers and offer a deal on advertising / features when you are on air ? -

(Former commercial radio gal from the US here.) Try checking the classifieds of the radio industry mags, and you may be able to pick up used equipment for dirt cheap. Including towers, no joke. You'd be surprised what's for sale out there in Radio Land.
You might also ask around local universities, especially if they have a communications engineering program, to see if they'd accept designing and building your setup as a class project. The university would cough up the money for a valuable "real world" experience project, perhaps.

Any ideas?

Got to raise £20,000 before January to bring our community radio station up to a standard to go live on FM. We just received our licence from Offcom but need to get a new aerial, transmitter etc. Anybody out there in blogland know any charities that would be willing to fund us?

Sorry not a clue, but there must be a list at the charities commission you could look at that will be split into things they do fund. If it is local radio won't you be doing ads for local businesses and raise funding that way? Good luck x
