The Magna Carta, the basis of most of British laws, was written in 1215 and enforced on the then King John. It was devised to prevent the King running roughshod over the people and being a law unto him self. (I am sure we have all seen Robin Hood).
Most fears revolved around the imprisonment of the populous without good reason and then their chattels being seized, to this end the following clause was added.
No freeman shall be arrested or imprisoned or disseised or outlawed or exiled or in any other way harmed. Nor will we [the king] proceed against him, or send others to do so, except according to the lawful sentence of his peers and according to the Common Law.
Now we see the Government acting worse than King John by allowing an individual to be held for 42 days without any legal reason. One wonders how long before many more of the statutes are torn up and discarded just like King John tried to do, with what he thought was the only copy of the Magna Carta.
The question is, is it time that a new Magna Carta for the people be drafted so that we can become a law abiding country once again.
What would you add as a clause for a new Magna Carta?
