For the third year in a row the consumption in oranges has dropped by 2%. The reason sited is that we British are just to busy to peel them and opt for satsumas and tangerines instead. In fact in the same year satsuma sales rose by 35%.

I must admit that I much prefer satsumas but feel that the major reason for the swing is availability. When I was a kid satsumas had a 'window' around Christmas time when they were on sale, now they are available all year round. The same goes for strawberries, cherries and other soft fruits that had a 'season'.

I am with TV Chef Gordon Ramsey that we should revert back to seasonal fruit and veg and resist sourcing them from all over the world. Do we really need a Granny Smith from South Africa or a King Edward potato from China?
