Former House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared on NBC’s 'Meet the Press' programme to discuss the crisis in Israel. He was seen to say, "today is not the fifth day of the war, it’s the 58th year of the effort by those who want to destroy Israel. As Ahmadinejad, the head of Iran, says, he wants to defeat the Americans and eliminate Israel from the face of the earth. So we should not see this event in isolation. There is an ... Iran/Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas alliance trying to destroy Israel.”

He is one of many senior politicians across the world that see the escalating conflict as the culmination of an inevitable conflict that started when Israel was given its own lands in 1948.

Yesterday Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan implored the UN to do everything in its power to broker peace between Israel/Hezbollah, but yet agian the rhetoric fell on deaf ears as both parties today stepped up their agression.

Like all wars that the 'major' world countries have been involved in since 1945 it has been done by proxy. In effect the Second World War never really ended, but went underground.

I honestly feel now that we have reached that point where relations between East and West cannot return to any sense of order and the only possible conclussion is all out World War.

The West is greedy for the raw commodities that sustain its existance, which God in his/her irony has placed in lands where their attainment has been, at best, difficult.

An all out war would involve the West first trying to secure as much of the worlds oil as possible. Where as the militant East would rather destroy these resources to ensure the cessation of the West’s decadent ways.

I was 8 years of age when the world last time came this near to Armageddon during the Cuban Missile crisis. But I honestly fear that this is the nearest we have got to the end of the world.

Who is to blame? We are all guilty. Every man/woman/child that has shown the want, want, need, that has driven the West's desire for the ultimate comforts in life has assisted what could be our final demise.
